I've been hesitating posting about this because I'm anxious about it, but delaying to get information isn't helping :-S I've decided to send my kids to school starting Monday. My DD would be in Grade 3 (turned 8 y.o. in Nov. 2010) and DS will be be in Grade 1 (turned 6 y.o. in Oct 2010). I shall be contacting the school board Monday morning to register.
Our local school is Evelyn Harrison P.S : http://www.tvdsb.ca/EvelynHarrison.cfm?subpage=2692
I would love help re: preparing, please, especially from folks who have children in the same school.
What are the food restrictions on the school? (i.e. peanut-free or tree-nut and peanut-free etc.)
What supplies is each child expected to have? How big should the backpack be? Is it expected that the lunchbox/bag fit in the backpack?
What other gear are they expected to wear and have? (like snow pants, change of clothes, gym shoes etc.)
I would guess all gear needs to be labeled? I guess I will need to get creative and busy!
What is the scheduling like for the school and these grades? (i.e. when are breaks scheduled etc.).
What is the policy around washroom use for students?
How often does this school have specicial events that involve food? (i.e. like some schools have every 2 weeks a pizza day). My kids are gluten-, corn-, soy- etc, free, so I will need to plan ahead for events so they won't be left out.
What is your general impression of the school/families/teachers/admins?
Any other questions I should be asking? / Any considerations I'm missing?
Thank you for reading my saga and for helping me/us with this big transition.
