I *think* my ds had this but not as a baby. He was 2. it was a tube to drain the fluid IN his lungs, not around. Is this different from what you are talking about?

It is probably a pleural effusion. I had one after dd was born after my surgeries. It is around the lungs like you stated, between the lung and chest cavity.

They may place a chest tube if it is a large amount of fluid. They tried to just do a tap on me but I had too much fluid (2 litres).
I was not sedated or anything but needed alot of pain meds once the chest tube was in as it was very painful. It was in for 5 days in my case.

If they place a chest tube you will see a small tube going in through the rib cage at the side and there will be a drain bag that collects the fluid.

I hope they can just do a tap and the baby is ok!

Baby is doing wonderfully now and has taken a turn for the good. We feel so blessed we were not sure if she was going to make it.
