Default Will a Real Estate Agent...

...come to your home and give you an idea of what your house would sell for before you decide whether to list with them? Or do you need to list with an Agent first, then they'll tell you what they think your house is worth. If we were to sell, we'd need to get $X out of the sale and if we couldn't get that, then it's not worth going through the hassle of purging/packing/prepping the house, KWIM? TIA!

Yes, he would do that for free, as per my experience, any real estate agent would give you a free estimate about how much your house is worth...and then you can decide whether or not to list it...
And if you need money out of the sale of your current place, try to list it privately first, it could save you a lot that would go to an agent...

yeah i think what some people do is get a # of agents through their places, like interview them kinda and get a suggested sale price. then based on that you decide who you would list with. if it seems too high or too low i would avoit that agent, they are either trying to underprice to get a quick sale, or overprice to get a higher commission and may not sell as quickly.

I'm pretty sure! We had an agent do that for us, free.

Most agents will do it for free however I have met agents that will charge a fee for doing a market evaluation. When you contact an agent just ask whether or not they charge.
