Default So, if you get into a car accident...

and the damage is quite bad on your vehicle, more than the vehicle might even be worth, what happens with insurance? do they offer a pay out or want to get it fixed (its drivable)?

careful on the roads this morning- its a skating rink

IMO, if it's anywhere near what the car might be worth, they write it off and pay you out. My civic was hit in a t-bone accident a few years back. It was worth about $8k at the time, the damage was about $5k or so and they paid me $12k. I have a great insurance company.

Is everything okay? I hope you're asking hypothetical.

oh i hope everything is OK!!! i think they prefer to pay it out. but you have to make sure that you get the best available payout. sometimes they low ball you at first.

They write it off and pay you out. Happened to us a few years ago when my Dh accidentally went into the vejicle in front of him and completely totalled our Grand Am at the time (who just so happened to be the former owner of our house lmao). Worked out ok in the end for us though, seeing as certain big ticket items were starting to go on the thing and it would have been much too costly to fix.

that's too bad We actually got a decent sized cheque from our company when it happened to our former Grand Am car (we are with Belair). We used that $ towards the down payment on another vehicle we bought a couple of months later.

Thanks for the concern everyone. Dh is fine, just a little shaken. At the reporting centre now and apparently its just packed!
Our Mazda's hood is crumpled in, the rad is bent and the lights smashed. It is well over $1000 to get fixed, our deductible is $1000 and its a 2001 (probably only worth 5-6 grand max). We don't know whether insurance would fix it or not even offer that, just a pay out. Then too, not even sure what they would offer to pay. Argh
We just bought a 2011 Escape and the Mazda was meant to be for DH to get to and from work/around the city vehicle. We just put $700 of fix ups, new tires and a full tank of gas (this morning! ) into the car.
    Expensive morning!

My Dh had an accident on his way to work when we first got married. It was a foggy morning and some van passed him and hit a car int he intersection on a red light and they all bounced off one another. thankfully no one got hurt. His air bags did not go off. He thought the car was drivable and fixable but the insurance company said no it was write off. We have a great insurance company who paid for the rental and paid it out plus some extra so we just bought another car. It was pretty quick to get all stuff done too.
