    Question Does anyone know about tax deductions?

    DH is working a temp job and we are trying to figure out how they figured out his pay. The way we figured it out he made $630 but only took home $350...maybe the missed hours? Is there a percentage that they take off so we can figure what take home should be? He works for a construction company if that makes a difference.

    hmmm ... the % is different and depends on how much you make on average per year. The construction industry isn't different when it comes to employee withholdings ... everyone pays CPP/EI/tax and then the cost of benefits (which might not be applicable) and extras that would be laid out in a contract. Is it possible he's paying for tools through his paycheque that he uses (and which should become his ?) Does the temp agency charge a fee or take a % of his earnings?

    Very roughly (and ballpark) you can count on say

    4.5% for CPP (this % includes the deduction amount averaged for the year)

    plus

    1.7% for EI (again, rough ball-park)

    plus

    say 15- 20% for taxes (this amount could be too high but it would depend on how much the temp thinks he's going to average for the year).

    The paystub should show what each deduction is so once you get it make sure the hours worked are correct.

    Thanks. He doesn't have any benefits or extras and it isn't a temp agency. He just started last week and they figure the job will last 1-2 months.

    The place is kind of odd, no one seems to really know what is going on. There is a big job to get done and they just want it done as fast as possible. I am sure it will all be clear once we see the paystub but he has no clue where and when he will get that. I just asked if there was somewhere to call and see said no he has to talk to his boss ( if he is on site) tomorrow.
