Question Did you move your child to a half-seat once they hit 40lbs?

Or just keep the full-back carseat and use a seatbelt once they are too tall for the carseat straps? I'm researching what I should do? He is getting pretty tall for it, and it says it is good up to 80lbs. When do I switch to using a seatbelt for it? He was 42'' tall in the summer. Or do most people buy a half-seat booster once they get close to 4 yrs? tia

i keep my kids in 5pt harnesses as long as possible, because a step up in seat is a step down in safety.

If you are planning to continue using the seat you have currently, check the side of the seat, it will likely tell you what weight limit the 5 point is intended for. One of our seats goes to 40 lbs in the 5-point, one goes to 65 lbs in the 5 point. If your son is heavier than the weight limit for the 5-point for your seat, then I would keep him in the high backed booster and use the car seat belt, positioned through the belt positioner on the seat.

A 5-point is safer to use as long as possible, but not if your child has exceeded the weight limit for the 5 point on that particular seat.

ETA- L is 40 lbs....in my car her seat goes to 65 lbs in the 5-point. At that point we will use the high back booster option on the seat with the car belt. In her dad's car, she just uses the high back booster now, since she is too heavy for the 5-point on that seat.

We have a 5pt that goes to 65lb as well. I don't like the half-seat boosters at all and don't plan on having one except for emergency use.

Aden has been over 40 lbs for about a year?? He is still harnessed for daily use. He is in a high back booster for rare monthly or so things (like if he goes somewhere with my mom).

My DD is 5.5 and 58 pounds. I still have her in a 5-point harness.

My DD is between 45-50lbs (I think about 48-9lbs) and she was moved into a highback booster sometime ago. She will be 8 years old in two weeks, and would probably kill me or die of embarrassment if I waited until she was 65lbs to move her out of a 5 point.

My DD1 is barely 40lbs and almost 5years old. We got a higher weight 5pt harnesses for her (Nautilus and True Fit) for our vehicles and the grandparents are going to have to start using the highback booster option on their carseats next time I see them and remember to change the seat. They have 3 in 1's to use for a few more years.

She currently has no idea that there is any other carseat option for her. Her sibs are in 5pt harnesses and she is rarely in anyone else's vehicle to see what they're in.

if you are choosing to switch to a booster stick with a high back. My dd only stopped using her high back ( then the backless ) when she was 7. It's much better for long drives especially if they might sleep.

My son can use a booster but we've kept in the 5 point except for the odd time in another vehicle.
I've put the no back booster in my parents van, but once a month they take the boys for the night and we just switch vans as it is a lot easier then redoing 3 car seats!

This should say it all. Not gory. Just a crash test vid. But it will show you the difference between Highback booster vs low (no)back booster.

I have R in a no back booster because he weighs too much for the other boosters we have right now.
I kept him harnessed for as long as I could, and if he ever gets back to below 65 lbs he's going back to being harnessed. Its more about saftey for me
