    Question Bank Question/cheque Question

I have a cheque written to both Myself and SO (both our names are on it) We do not have a joint banking account, therefore we can not cash it.

Can I just put it in through the bank machine? or will I get in big trouble when the open the envelope?

I would get the person to write a new cheque with just my name, but its not that easy at the moment.

I had this happen. We just both had to go into the bank together to verify that we were both okay with it going into just one of our accounts.

What Bank are you with? We did this at CIBC this morning, and they wouldn't allow us, told us it was illegal for them to put it in one account

I deposit cheques with my DH's name on them into my account all the time and have never had a problem. Mind you, I always do it through the bank machine...

I'd put it through the bank machine. I've accidentally put one with my name into DH's account and it didn't matter. At least it does have your name on it

I used to deposit cheques with dh's name or mine into his all the time. I used bank machines every time. I also never bothered signing my cheques I put into his acct.
I think the only time it's a real issue through bank machines is if one of you then calls the bank and says that you let someone else cash my cheque, wtf, and then they yank the $ etc.
It has your name on it somewhere so I doubt there'd be a problem in teh bank machines.

Does it say M2M OR DH... or M2M AND DH. If it is OR, either of you can legally cash it.

If it is AND... are your accounts at the same bank/branch? If so, there is nothing illegal about them verifying one signature and depositing the cheque in to the other account.

So I just looked at the cheque and it says M2M & SO so lastname I dont have the same last name as my SO. And eh said he will not deposit it into his account, he said he cant afford to have his bank account frozen or somethng.

This is slightly annoying. I signed the back when he tried to take it to his bank (BMO) and they told him the same thing that we had to open a joint account. So we figured we would both go into CIBC today (my bank) and cash it into mine together, but again was told no.

Its a personal cheque from a family member, I will just have to try and get in touch with them at some point within the next few months.

I guess this is one con to having separate accounts.

Why doesnt he just sign it?! Thats alllll you need to do - he signs YOU cash it in YOUR account. Done.

ETA: Just put it in the machine, dont even ask. Honestly there is no reason they cant cash it - why did they say they wouldnt.

I don't know, they just explained it was illegal, the teller was going to, but the bank manager said no. I will get him to sign the back and I will just shove it through the ATM....

I would tell the bank you are going to set up a joint account, deposit the cheque, withdraw the money and then close the account.
Maybe they will just cash it to save themselves the trouble
