Question Anyone have Pet Insurance? and if so - through whom?

Is there more to it? Like things that aren't covered etc? Pre-existing conditions? I have been suggested by my vets to look into it for my doggie. Thanks.

I had pet insurance which I paid $12/mth to but we cancelled it after reading the information. It said it had a $500 deduction!! So unless I was already going to pay $500+ for my cat being sick it just wasn't worth it. It also didn't cover a lot of things. It was the one you get through Pet Smart but I can't remember the name of it anymore.

I looked into it but decided to self insure. I automatically put $20 a month into a seperate savings account for my dog. It is to cover unexpected vet bills. In retrospect actual insurance would have been a better choice but I never expected as a young dog she would have a freak accident and break her leg while in our kitchen. (Probably trying to climb onto the stove to lick a dirty pan).

Don't have it for the cats/bird, but definitely I have it for the horse. I used to insure through a private insurance company, but since moving back to Canada, it is offered through OEF (Ontario Equestrian Federation), and my membership fees cover it.

When I had private though, it was quite a rigamarole. They wanted what horse was worth, etc., also pre-existing conditions. Age was a factor too. Not sure if works the same with small animals, but I know a horse over 15 is hard to insure with a private company.

That's what we used to suggest to clients... just put the money each month that you would spend on pet insurance into an account so it will be there when you need it. There are many factors including breed, pre-existing conditions, level of coverage, etc.

I had it for one of my dogs. I forget who I got it through. I too canceled after about a year. I just didn't feel worth it. If something were to happen to the dog, we felt the insurance company would likely try to avoid paying...then there's the deductible... I dunno.... We also knew we would pay whatever we had to to keep her alive no matter what the issue was (before kids.. lol), so why bother?

Your vet likely could recommend a company. We got the pamphlet from our vets.
