I have heard it is a good idea to put tea tree oil in your children's shampoo when they are in school to help revent lice. Anyone who how much I should put in?

Tea tree oil is really strong, so what I woudl do is just put one drop on my hand and then add the shampoo then kinda mix it up in my hand and use it that way.

My Dd uses detangling spray every morning - her hair is a nasty mess in the morning. I add a few drops to the spray bottle.

OH I totally reccomend it. We use tea tree oil here for everything. Five drops to a shampoo bottle is definatly fine Even ten.
Yea, someone put signs up on all the trees in our neighbourhood complaining that their kids got head lice... and that dying your hair “Aint going to fix it so make sure you treat your kids hair!!!“ I was like sheesh! LOL!.

This is a huge fear of mine sending DD off to school. How many drops do you put in the bottle? Does it smell bad? Where do you buy it? Ok, my questions are done.

I bought mine at RCSS in the health food section. It is a small bottle. I don't think it smells bad. After I used in the past (cousin's had lice and I wasn't sure how much to use) I couldn't smell it on their hair.

Actually my friend's DD has lice while in the hospital (got it before) and the nurses helped her clean her head out, and the doctor said her DD was lacking in some amino acids, and thats why she keeps getting it. My friend went to calming scents (sp?) a herbal all natural place here (recommended by the doctor. And they confirmed it and gave my friend a website to visit. And also she got some all natural suppliments and some shampoo called “bug off“.
I think the website was Welcome to HeadLice.org, but I will ask her tomorrow what it was exactly. (yep thats the site)
The website says this about tee tree oil
SAFETY WARNING
Tea tree oil is a different example. It is touted as safe and natural, yet claims to be a fungicide and bacteriacide. This is a case where "natural" is misleading: if it kills organisms, then it must be treated with respect. Pure tree oil is contraindicated for babies, young children, pregnant women, and some pets. Tea tree oil is not to be used daily, and is toxic to the liver in high doses. High doses can also be irritating to the skin and provoke an allergic reaction in some people.

Oh man, I agree with the 'watch out it's strong' recs. I used it with aloe vera as underarm deodorant for a week, a few years ago, and it burned my skin wicked bad. That stuff is powerful! Serious dilution required for sure.

I know someone who used TTO on his feet and he had a severe reaction. I totally agree treat it with respect.

DH's ex puts undiluted straight TTO on the girls hair every single day =( Terrible terrible.....
Using TTO as a preventative measure is a myth. The best way to ensure your kids don't get it, or at least don't get a bad case of it, is to invest in a GOOD Lice Master comb. Once per week go through their hair while they are in the tub by using the comb.....done, super easy and nothing harmful to their health.
ETA: Info according to the lice squad rep.

I have the california baby shampoo for DD. It has the TTO and lavander in it. Although she uses it a couple times a week and now I'm worried its to much. I'm assuming the risk is like using any essential oil in over use, but diluted isin't so bad?
We've thankfully never had a lice outbreak here (knock on wood) but I'm also adament on no hat/hairbrush etc. sharing so hopefully she's just learned. I'd hate to find the little black bugs in her full dark hair.
