They are very good there. Amazing what they can do to help a kid get their world under control.

Very interesting info. I will definately look into cpri. Had never heard about it until now. Thank you to those who have shared their childrens situations. I've been feeling very isolated in dealing with the anxiety, particularily as school i's just around the corner. I just hope that if this turns out to be permanent it remains mild. It was so difficult to witness when they were at their worst. Thank you everyone.

Tics tend to peak at around 10 years of age, and then typically fade away.
Tics don't need to be a bad thing!
My DS has a ton of mental health issues, and the tics are really the least of our worries lol
Although, I certainly do understand how it can be upsetting!

J had vocal tics before he went on medication.
We were told that the stimulants will increase them, and a non stimulant will not affect them at all.
We chose the non stimulant (Strattera) which made them go away 95%.
Sorry your doctor said that to you. Not ok at all!

Doesn't seem right that the prescribing doc didn't give you all the details! Even the slightest of posibilities should be told...so you know what to look for and how to react. I would see if you can get another doc for your LO. Good luck!

I'm trying to find a pediatrician for her. She's 7 now, considering asking my doctor to take her on.

Good luck! I know our pediatrician won't take on new clients without the ok from the existing doctor.

I agree that you should try to get into a psych. Obviously the dr doesn't understand ADHD meds. DS and I have never had tics but I've read enough years ago and now to know that (as others said) the meds can worsen or start tics if they have the disorder. I don't believe the meds can cause it, so most likely it was something she was prone to but hadn't exhibited yet (and maybe wouldn't have).
I'm not thinking its something that just goes away as your doctor said. And also you ALWAYS start on the lowest dose meds and then work up (unless maybe she was on a higher dose of a similar med and was being switched - even then I would think you start lower).
DS started on the lowest dose of Adderall and we slowly worked up the dose 4 times. The goal is to help your child by using the lowest dose possible.
I wouldn't feel guilty and wouldn't give up on meds, but would find a psychiatrist who can help find a medication that is less likely to develop tics.
DS rarely eats lunch - he eats lots till 8am, then eats practically nothing till 3:30/5pm, but eats enough the rest of the time to still be gaining weight. This is a side effect I knew was likely to happen and got worse with higher doses. I understand that the benefits from meds outweigh his not eating during the day.

Daegan has been on both Concerta and Biphentin. He is now on Vyvanse. As already mentioned, ticks and ADHD often go hand-in-hand. Stimulants are well known to bring out latent ticks. I found with Daegan when he first started out on Concerta his hair twidling became very prominent... he'd double-fist it, twidling his hair with both hands simultaneously. This was not a surprise to me as he has always been prone to this behaviour, it was just maxed out to a new extreme. It did wean over a few weeks. Another “new“tick presented also. He would have unusualy mouth movements... something I had never seen. Again it diminished over time. When I switched him to Biphentin, it was like starting over again with the ticks. He stayed on Biphentin for just a short time. With Vyvanse I still see the hair twiddling but at a much lower frequency. Now I am starting to seriously wonder if alot of the time the hair twiddling is triggered by stress and/or unrest. Anxiety is something else that is often seem in those with ADHD. My daughter, twiddles her hair alot now. It is a behaviour that started when she started meds for depression/anxiety/insomnia (prozac & trazodone). It is a self-soothing behaviour. In her case, this behaviour is not disruptive to the enjoyment of her life.
I'd be looking at whether the “'good“ gained by the medication out-weights the bad“''. If the side-effects are disporportionate then I'd be looking at a different medication/doseage. I'd also be questioning the prescribing doctor and not leave his/her examination room until I was satisfied that my questions were adequately answered/dealt with.
A good book that was recommended to me is: '“Straight talk about psychiatric medications for kids“ by Dr. Timothy E Wilkens.

Thanks everyone. At the moment I'm using homeopathic supplements. So far magnesium showed almost instant reduction in tic frequency, the rest will take a few weeks to determine efficiency. I think I'll stay off the meds until I've exhausted all other alternatives. Her hyperactivity was a cake walk compared to how the tics have affected her.
