I think it's great LM and everyone else that is giving it up, I never eat it and if I do by accident do right off I can taste how chemically it is. I was lucky to read a report on how rats reacted to it and grew tumors on their body, it was disgusting. I gave it up when I learnt about it too.

Do you know what name brands have this? Or where I can buy them? It seems like every time I pick up a pack of gum it says asparatame, sucralose or some other artificial blah fest. I'd love it if I could get a gum that I didn't have to worry about.

I'm in.
I'd like to know where you get that gum too!
And LM, try a plain yoghurt, they often don't have more than two ingredients (milk solids of some kind and bacteria cultures). Once it's mixed in a smoothie with fruit, you won't notice that it isn't flavoured.

I'll try it with you! I'm up for the challenge. I, too, drink a lot of diet pop and had already targeted Sept. 1 as my day of quitting (pop, at least). My MIL quit drinking pop with aspartame and she swears that her joints feel better (she has arthritis). I have psoriasis so it will be interesting to see if there is a difference and it improves as I have been having a lot of flare ups lately that are very annoying.
Good luck to us!

If it makes you feel better, my homeopathic doctor says full fat yogurt is the only way to get all the nutrients and benefits of yogurt. As soon as they mess around taking fat out, its loses much of its benefits. I buy stoneyfield plain, which tastes amazing and is 3.8 % mf, which I dont think is full fat, but its the closests I can find.
My experience is that if I eat low fat stuff I crave more food. I think your body isnt fooled by low cal low fat foods and you end up eating more than you would if you just ate real food in moderation that you crave, kwim?

I think that is probaby true. Fat has been given a bad name in the past couple of decades.

Remember the Susan Powter low fat book? Sure, people lost weight, but no fat is pretty unhealthy. Then came low/no carb and fat was okay, so long as a crumb of bread didnt touch your lips We keep blaming the foods. And while I agree that sometimes certain foods arent the best for us as individuals, I think we need to STOP listening to all these absolute diet trends and start listening to our bodies.

Most health stores carry gum and mints with Xylitol in it. I know I have bought some at lyn-Dys. The kind I have here right now is called Spry and it's from S&S health in while oaks mall and it was $1.13 for 10 pieces. I know at GNC they have gum with it in too, I don't remember if it's the same brand or not, but it had xylitol in it too.

I quit aspartame at christmas/new years. I have to say it was not easy. But I had a diet coke yesterday and it tasted like shit. I used to drink a case of it at work in 2 shifts.
My dh is in the agriculture industry and he says they have to haul as poison. With labels etc...
Another interesting thing I have heard is that you are more likely to gain weight using aspartame because its a chemical. Your body cant process it and doesnt know what to do with it and so it stores it as fat! Crazy right?
Anyhow, since christmas I have lost 20 pounds - and I have changed my eating too, its not just aspartame. I also noticed I am not depressed anymore. I am off my anti depressants and feel a lot better!
Good luck mamas!

I won't touch the stuff, nor let my kids touch the stuff. It's one of the things that is absolutely banninated in our family. So bad for you.
I wish my dad wouldn't eat/drink it; he consumes it on a regular basis. He's diabetic, so he justifies it that way (eg, “I have to drink diet pop because I can't drink regular pop“; “Uhm, no, you don't have to; you could just not drink pop!“). But I still wish that he wouldn't.

Oohhhh, I could so get into this! A friend of mine was a fellow diet coke-aholic (as am I) and her doctor told her that chronic consumption of aspartame can give you MS-like symptoms and headaches/migraines. I def. have the headache issue along with a bunch of other health related crap. I am wanting to start fuelling my body with better things in general so this is a great place to start!
