Default infant with silent aspiration

My twin boys were born at 31 weeks.
The one boy has been in and out of hospital with pheumonia's this past year. After having a barium swallow test done they found he was aspirating without a protective cough. We have been thickening all liquids for 4 months now. I was wondering if there was any once else that have had the same experience. The doctor seems to think he will outgrow it.

They have said our DS has silent aspiration during his modified barium swallow studies (he's had more than one). He is mostly tube fed with oral trials. The last time, they did however say that his technique has improved...so perhaps it is something your DS will outgrow. Fingers crossed he does so soon. He might just need to get more strength and experience first.

DD had silent aspiration for a long time...and is on a feeding tube...but when she did get oral stuff it had to be thickened...as she got older she outgrew the silent aspiration and can now have stuff that is not thickened.

What are some of there main issues? My son does not have any other issues that is known. I just wonder if they missed something. also when I tell the nurses and doctors in emerg that he aspirates and needs his fluids thickened. they just look at me weird. I guess because he is not typical? I'm not sure. I wish I could have some answers to we he would aspirate.

DD has a heart defect and during open heart surgery when she was a baby they nicked the nerve to her diaphragm and paralyzed it causing her to breath 3x what a normal baby would breath...so she had to have another surgery to correct that. She was not able to have food orally between the 2 surgeries because risk of aspiration were too high. After surgery she refused to take anything orally. When we finally got a swallow study done at just over a year old we found out about the aspiration. She also had an issue with throwing up and she would aspirate on her vomit and get pneumonia from that...so she had a surgery to make it so that she could not throw up.

My 4 year old does too. She pretty much aspirates everything she takes orally, even some of the thick stuff (like pudding). some of it is silent, and some isn;t.

I dont have a real reason why she does...she had 2 open heart suregies as an infant and was in critical care for 6 months with a lot of complications. But i'm not really sure why she aspirates and i get weird looks for why shes on a feeding tube and has swallowing issues.

Thanks for all your input. I guess I will have to wait it out. I hate waiting and tired of the vomiting

My dd has silent and obvious aspiration. She has many other issues that causes it. She has frequent pneumonias as well.

There is a website for parents of children that reflux. It is a very active site and you may find many BTDT answers there as well. I will pm you

Hi there,
My DS had silent aspiration on thin liquids for quite awhile after having Heart surgery. He was N.G tube fed and on thickened feeds. His vocal cord paresis healed and he was able to take regular feeds. Hope that your little one is able to take thin liquids soon, hang in there!
