I LOVE the article - I wish I knew about babywearing when i had my daughter. The only thing I played around with, was at the very beginning (I don't think you need to tell them that you don't get the magazine yourself).
I am concerned about the lack of diversity in Today’s Parent that fit all lifestyle choices when it comes to Canadian families. You publish a magazine that is meant to inform Canadian families from infancy to teenage years with articles that you describe as “both practical and philosophical, tackle the complete range of relevant issues, including health, education and behaviour.”
Over the past year, I have noticed that not once, have you discussed Babywearing options other than the odd mention of purchasing a Snugglie or Bjorn. With the recent recall of bag slings, the baby wearing industry is struggling. Many small home businesses as well as larger corporations are losing business. Just today a notice was released that a company that has made ring slings for years, Hot Slings, is going out of business. Why have you yet to release an article comparing the many safe and secure babywearing options that are still available? Did you know that in many cities across Canada there are monthly groups that meet specifically to teach and help each other perfect carries?
There are many benefits to babywearing that I’m sure many new parents would love to learn about. Besides allowing mothers to be hands free there are many statistics that prove that babywearing helps relieve colic and babies simply cry less. Many of these carriers will allow a parent to keep their child closer to them for up to 35lbs. I would love to see you publish something “outside the box” and allow parents to see all the options available to them. An article that would allow parents to see that ring slings, mei tai’s, and wraps are still safe to use. Inform them of the benefits and remind them that only one style of sling was recalled. If someone doesn’t step in and help an amazing industry and essential parenting style used by many is going to be lost in red tape.
