Yup, I was talking with Tanja of Sewfunky about it a few days ago. The stuff going on in the states will have a huge impact on Babywearing as a whole - not just in the US.
I'm worried as to what this means for Canadian companies....and babywearing safety. I can forsee the regulations coming into play and successful WAHM companies going out of business (a la Hotslings) and a whole underground babywearing market popping up with unsafe DIY. Freaks me right out.

yes but they need regulations bad! But it needs to be done right, hopefully the bcia will be able to help gov't etc along with this so that the wahm's who do make good safe carriers will not suffer in anyway.

Yes, they do need regulations like crazy. I've seen a lot of unsafe carriers through the years...however the regulations that the gov't is trying to impose will make it almost impossible for WAHM's to continue. From what I understand anyway. The testing that will be needed is much more than many can afford, thus the closing of some of our favourite WAHMs.
Sewfunky for one, a local company that makes kickass ringslings/pouches...if regulations spread to Canada she won't be able to afford the testing needed to sell her slings in the market place.
I really hope the BCIA can help, and that the regulations they do impose don't cause many of my favourite businesses to close.

I see what you are saying. I didnt realize that they were going to have to pay for testing. That is too bad. Sewfunky is amazing, I would hate to see it go under. That would be really sad. There are a lot of WAHM's stuff I love and they are all such wonderful people.

Yup, product testing would have to be paid for by the company.
It will be hard for alot of them to meet regulations because of the differing fabrics, sewing styles, carrier styles etc. There is hardly anything that is consistant among all babycarriers. So many of them may struggle to even meet regulations.
It truly sucks, which is why it is important to support the BCIA in their efforts. The last thing I want to see is it becoming difficult for mamas to find/buy/sell carriers.

exactically. Ive been trying to spread the word abotu the BCIA. They need a lot of support. They have a terrific board too, I can see it being very successful in making things work for the little guy.
