Default My garden mess--and the wildlife in it

I have a very small backyard. In the back corner, the previous owner had a very nice perrenial garden. She obviously knew what she was doing. I obviously have no clue In a few short years, I've managed to turn it into an overgrown nightmare.

I've started to try just clearing the whole thing out since most of the nice stuff has been choked out by weeds and grasses. I do have 2 peonies and a lily that I would LOVE to revive somehow because I love them.

In terms of trying to prep the soil and get it in better condition, here is what I have found so far today:

-one ant hill that is bigger than I've ever seen (black ants)
-a couple of ant colonies with small red ants
    - hundreds (at least) of small spiders with a bright yellow body and light brown head/legs
-hundreds of these other , bigger, dark brown spiders (the kind the sometimes come up from the sink drain, it looks like)
    -hundreds of snail shells.
    -some slugs
areas of soil covered in a layer of moss.

So far I've sprayed the 3 ant colonies today. That's all. I have NO idea where to start with all these other creatures.

That poor woman probably loved that garden and I totally butchered it

OMG, I can't stand creepy crawlies, so if it was me, I'd build a box around the garden and put a sign on it that says “enter at your own risk“! LOL I'm itchy now just thinking about it. *shudder* I say you get top scores just for trying to deal with those critters.
