My Mood:
Default Having trouble with meds or having trouble with my teen?

My 13 year old is ADHD and ASD. He's been on various medications over the years and have always had success with them in terms of attention span, focus and ability to control his actions. Lately (the past year) we are struggling to find a med that has as much success as in the past. We switched from Adderall XR to Concerta and now to Biphenetin. It feels like we've taken a step back to 5 years ago. They hyperactivity has increased considerably and the unusual makes-no-sense-why-he-would-do-that things have started again. He's doing things that remind us of when he was a much younger kid.

For example, last night at the beach when it was time to leave he was throwing a fit about not wanting his sand castle broken. he would hit or throw sand at anyone who came near...including me. He thought everyone wanted to break it and he wanted it there forever and believed it could be. This type of behaviour we haven't seen in many years.

The doses are correct and are calculated on his current weight but some days theres very little difference to him on medication and off medication where in the past there was a HUGE difference. Is it maybe his age? Or should we keep trying new meds?

I have no experience with this but wondered if hormones change things a lot in these kinds of circumstance? I would question the effectiveness of the meds, since he seems to be reverting. Could you ask his doc? Good luck!

I have no idea. Have you ever been on the Millermom boards? It's a board for ADHD and there's a whole section for medication issues and questions.

Learning Disabilities (LDs), ADHD and Education Support, The*SAFE*Site - Home

Check it out. They might be able to help.

Concerta and Biphentin are the same medication.. just a different technology in its delivery. Daegan was on Concerta, now Biphentin. The hormonal changes of puberty I understand plays havoc on med effectiveness.
