bag slings deadly, and its finally going to make the news
Im really happy to see that they are finally going to make a big deal about this. (by they I mean the media and the gov't). I just hope that it doesnt give all of babywearing a bad name because as all of us babywearers know
there are so many safe ways of wearing your baby

Let me preface by saying that I am a baby wearer. I have/use a Mei Tei, a woven wrap and a ring sling.
When I had DD1, I recieved the bag style sling as a gift. Tried it out a couple times and was never comfortable with the way that DDs head was bent forward. Positional Asphyxication was a huge worry, so I returned it. IMO they are dangerous.
when pregnant with DD2, I asked everyone I knew for sling/baby wearing opinions. I good friend works in the Peds ICU here in London. She told me a babe was brought in there, asphyxiated in a sling at the park with mom and older child. She did not know what type of sling he was in. Sooooo scary. It really did make me worry. Eventually I concluded that slings are like any other baby device. You need to use them in a safe and conciencious manner (not saying that other mother didn't ) and be aware of the possible risks. I would hope that anyone who reads the aritcle would understand that not all carriers are the same, and some, just have a design flaw which makes them dangerous.......

My dad sent me a similar article a few months back. the title was something about the dangers of babywearing or having a baby in a carrier. Then the article specified the type that was the problem, but yeah, nice generalization in the title.

Would that include a Maya Wrap Pouch? If so, I need to let my sister know.

Use of slings, also known as “babywearing,“ has become increasingly popular in recent years, with colorful and vibrant slings seen on Hollywood moms and sold everywhere from big retailers such as Babies R Us to smaller outfits like BabySoSmart.com in Kansas City, Mo.
|
When they say “babywearing“ it could mean anything. I know they specifically said sling but it could be read soooo differently..

I bought a pouch sling before DD was small and didn't feel comfortable with her using it either. She didn't have any head or neck control and it just didn't position her well. It gave me a reason to slack on laundry and housework for a while.

No they just mean those bag slings, like the Infantino type ones.
Tho with any sling and a newborn it's important to make sure their neck is pretty straight/head not crunched forward.

There is a facebook group hanging around with a focus on using carriers correctly. Join up, spead the word! It's so important we use and teach others to use their slings correctly. It's also important to remember that a manufacturer will try and sell you a sling, saying it works for all ages, when in reality, most are not good for the newborn stage.
The only carrier for newborns I recommend/teach would be stretchy or woven wraps. Newborn babes simply do not have enough head and back control to remain in any other carrier safely. If used with a young infant, parents who use Mei Tais and ringslings should be tought the importance of watching for slumping and keeping the airways open.
I really and truly hope that one bad apple doesn't spoil the bunch.
