Default Iron fortified cereal vs. Mama made?

Hello,

I have been following food discussions in 0-1 years, but thought there may be some helpful advice in this section as well. I am looking to start solids in the next little while, and am told that iron is especially important at 6 months. I want to make my own cereal for DD, but thought I would see if anyone has ways to ensure that my LO is getting enough iron?

If in doubt you could always add some blackstrap molasses to the cereal to up the iron content and it tastes yummy. Children will get iron from other sources, infact, many even decide not to do cereal. If you are making it from home you have the added benefits of a natural, non processed, additive and preservative free cereal..can't beat that!

I made my own with aden. I just groound whatever grain (oatmeal, rice etc) til it was a powder and boiled it.

Evalynn I didnt make it. She has been on table foods from retty well right away. She has had oatmeal but it is just the same stove top oatmeal I make myself (minus the sugar lol).

Thanks everyone. I will definitely look into adding molasses. I also have ground up dry rice, into rice powder and will boil it with water, then add breast milk to get the consistency I want!

I am making my own for DD right now, and she is not enjoying it at all. She can't have anything with milk or soy in it, so pre-packaged cereals are out for us. I'm not worried about the iron content at this point. We were going to skip cereal altogether, and I think since she is hating both rice and barley, we're going to take a break from them and carry on with veggies.

Depending on what you read, there is debate about the iron and it isn't cut and dry. Besides, you don't absorb iron added to cereal very well compared to iron that is naturally in foods.

This is a good site with 'recipes' as well as lots of info on different topics related to feeding including the whole thing about iron: Wholesome Homemade Baby Food Recipes, Make your baby healthy homemade baby food with our easy baby food recipes, solid food tips, baby nutrition & more!
