Default communion

Do your children participate in communion with you? Why or why not? I noticed yesterday that only some of the children took communion at church. Just interested to hear people's thoughts on this.

I am Catholic....so children don't get communion until they have recieved their “First Communion“ at around age 8.

Yes, those who have not had their First Communion yet will cross their arms over their chest or put their hand on their heart and the priest will bless them.

This is also an option for adults who are attending Mass but are not Catholic, or who are not receiving communion for some other reason, such as a state of serious sin (for example, when my marriage to Dh had not yet been blessed by the Church). I believe anyone who wants a blessing can go up and receive one. Just say 'Please Bless Me'

Well I know it's different for Catholic churches, but we attend a Baptist church. I've heard the argument that children cannot understand the significance of communion and therefore should not participate...

Our kids do, well not DS b/c he's just 2 although some parents have their LO's that age participate. It's an Anglican Church, and if you're baptised you're welcome to take communion.

Typically I was used to having to have done your first communion (Anglican church), but the minister at my parents church (where I used to be) had a very interesting point of view. He didn't see why it was necessary to deny a child if they wished to participate. That none of us necessarily truly grasped everything in our relationship with God and that didn't prevent us from coming to the table and joining in communion. If the parent is okay with it and the child wishes to receive, he has no problem with them taking communion.

The last couple of times we have been there my daughter has wanted to take communion and he asked if I was okay with that. I didn't feel there was anything to be gained by preventing her from receiving communion (bread, we pass on the wine )
