do you think it's a good school?

we're looking at a house in that area and I'm just looking at schools for DS for nxt year (or maybe this year )

I can't say I'm impressed with schools websites (unless I just can't find the info!) - I would have assumed they would have a page that tells you ABOUT the school...

ie.. I dont know ANYTHING about huron heights.. I'm looking for what grades they have there.. it doesnt even show on their website that it's french immersion...Id like to know what grade FI starts in..

(I'm really flustered this morning, so it could be me entirely that is blind and can't see this stuff)

That area school is Huron Heights, I went to the parent Info night a few weeks back and was very impressed. You can call the principal anytime for a tour and take your child along. All she asked was 3-4 days notice, I plan to take DS to show him his big school. If you have any questions about the Bellwood neighbourhood let me know. I've lived in the hood a long time.

My girls go to Huron Heights. They are bussed. I love the school. They teachers are fabulous, the principal is great. I have nothing but good to say about the school. You can always call and see if you can go in and chat with the principal and take a tour.

They're French First Language, though, are they not? Different admission criteria...

They are FFL and I am pretty sure that that neighbourhood would be La Tamise for the Public FFL board.

    Here is Huron Heights site

I have to look into the criteria for french first language schools for DS - we don't speak it at home, and his french is weak to say the least - but he undeen rstands it when I speak it to him.

I went to FFL school when I was young and I know it was a huge help for me.

    off to research

I have a written copy of the criteria upstairs but am too lazy to go get it.

    Loosely, it's :

    1. Your first language is French. You continue to speak and understand French. (doesn't really matter if child does)

    or

    2. You were a student of a French First Language School (Not FI) and continue to be able to speak and understand French

    or

    3. Child has a brother or sister attending the school.

I also need to add, it all depends on the admin of the school. In London, most are quite flexible and will let most kids in.

Just keep in mind, all written communication from the school will be in French, including the report card. If this is a concern, please consider FI. (This is not directed at you Foxi, just an fyi for other parents that might be considering ffl )

    thanks!!!

I really am torn about where to send him, I was concerned that FFL schools he would need to speak much more of it, but I remember when I started I didnt - we have the same 'set up' as I did growing up - my mom is totally bilingual, but we always spoke english at home.. now I'm totally bilingual, but DH is totally english. So communications etc wouldn't be an issue - just how DS would adjust (which I think being immersed in it, would be totally fine)

Do you get to meet the teachers before sending them there?
My hesitation is I remember being in French immersion as I got older (and there were no french schools) and some FI teachers are clearly english, and the classes were not good - other FI teachers were fabulous and did an awesome job- it made such a big difference
