Default What are the chances...

Hi there!

I don't know if you can answer this, I am starting a new job on Jan 4th. I was about 9 weeks pregnant when hired - legally I don't have to disclose that information, but I am now starting to show a little.

I am wondering whether I should approach management immediately and advise them that I am pregnant, or just continue on until they figure it out for themselves, as I understand legally I do not necessarily have to tell them at all until I plan my maternity leave - but out of courtesy I sort of feel like I maybe should, instead of just growing before their very eyes.

Additionally I am concerned that I will be let go near the end of my probationary period- which I assume will be the standard 3 months- with no valid reason, just because they can. I know someone that this has happened to with this company, though I'm not sure of the quality of employee she was for attendance, etc.

Any advice you could give would be great! Thanks!

Hi there!

I can definitely give my opinion. Personally, I'd choose to wait a few weeks before disclosing your pregnancy. You definitely want to show the company that you were a good person to hire, and that you'll do an excellent job. That being said, you probably shouldn't wait forever to tell them, and I wouldn't let them find out on their own. Do you have any type of relationship with your direct manager? Do you think s/he will be open to the news?

Technically, organizations can not discriminate against you due to pregnancy, so they can't let you go at 3 months due to that (although as you said, they can let go of anyone prior to their probationary period for no reason).

It's a tough situation, and not an easy one to be in (and I have been on both sides of this situation- as a newly pregnant employee and on the management side of hiring a newly pregnant woman).

Let me know if you have any other specific questions.

Good luck!
