    Default another booster question

    Ds1 is 42lbs and is also 42".
When I switched ds3 out of his bucket rf to regular rf, I went to a car seat clinic to make sure it was in right. That went well, but they insisted that ds1 is safest in a booster and seat belt because of his size, and not the 5 point harness.
I didn't really like the idea and as winter approaches, I really don't feel comfortable with him in a seat belt.
It is the same carseat either way. It goes to 80lbs and however many inches for the booster, but only 40lbs and 40" for the 5 point. His shoulders aren't above the hight notch yet.
What would you do? Ignore the clinic and keep him in the 5 point or do as told and use the seat belt?

We don't really want to buy a new one as we already have two for each child (for both vehicles).

I'd buy a new one, we had no choice with DD since she was too tall but only 30lbs but I would have bought a seat that harnessed to 65lbs anyway now that it's an option.

I vote other - sounds like you'll either have to go with the booster, or upgrade your carseat to something that can do the 5pt harness at a higher height/weight. We just bought a new carseat that will allow us to do the 2nd option for my 3.5yo who is going to max the height on her current 3-in-1.

ETA: can you sell one of your current seats to offset the cost of a new one with a higher limit? Just have the upgrade in the vehicle he uses most and the booster in the other?

sounds like you either need to upgrade the carseat or get a booster. If he's over the weight and height limit for the seat than it sounds like he'd be safer in the booster. Good luck with your decision.

    How old is your ds?

I'd likely get a new ff that harnesses longer.

I voted other, not sure of the age of your DS1. Personally, If he's under 5 I would be shopping for a bigger FF carseat for him. If he's 5+ and would sit well in a booster I'd be willing to give it a try. The 3 in 1's generally don't make good boosters (they tend to position the seat belt too high), so either way you may need to do some shopping.

I definitely wouldn't ignore the clinic, your oldest child is over the weight limit of the seat when used as a 5 pt harness.

He just turned 4 this week So he has a while left in a seat. The current ones we have are the combination (2 in 1) ff and high back booster. Which we thought was a good choice at the time as they are good to 80lbs, but we didn't read the fine print of only 40lbs in the harness.
He's been in the booster part of it for a couple weeks and the seat belt does fit him well across the shoulder (it has an adjuster) but it just doesn't seem nearly as safe as 5 point.

I personally have nothing against booster seats, but I agree with Turtle that you can't use that seat as a carseat if your son isn't within the weight range anymore. You'd have no case against the company producing the seat if an accident ever occurred because it would be considered misuse. If you want him in a carseat, you'll have to get one with a higher weight restriction.

I'm going car seat shopping tomorrow. Hopeing to find one at Sears (I have $100 worth of points) or CT as I have over $50 of CT money.

I have two younger ones that may possibly use it as well, but with ds2's size, weight won't be an issue!

Uh so I voted 5pt harness for your DS weight/age/height before realizing you meant in a seat that you already have. I would NOT use that seat as a 5 pt harness with him once he is beyond the weight limits. If you do that, you are using him as the crash test dummy.

Glad to hear you're heading shopping. Some seats I would seriously consider in your shoes are the following:

Safety 1st Apex65 (THS 17“ ) Harness Max weight 65lbs) makes a decent booster * note your vehicle must have high back seats or headrests for proper installation of this seat according to it's manual*
    Graco Nautilus
(THS 18.25“) Harness Max weight 65lbs
Sunshine Kids Radian Harness Max weight 65lbs
Britax Frontier (THS 18.25“) Harness Max weight 65lbs

    HTH

Oh and I assume the current seat is a AO or AOE? If so, the last notch on the back of the seat for the headrest adjustment is only to be used in booster mode.
