    Default Heparin Injections if preg?

I met with a hematologist today and found out that once I eventually conceive I need to take daily heparin injections until at least 2 months after delivery. He says there is no harm to the baby but has anyone else heard of this or have experience with this?

Dr's recently found that I have anti-phospholipid antibodies in my blood that cause clotting and can also cause early miscarriage (just what everyone TTC wants to hear).

Just wondering if any other moms have done this and if there were any complications. I was hoping that once I do conceive to have a home birth..... but I am not sure that being on a blood thinner and a home birth would work.

I was on fragmin injections with DS, I have “high order recurrent miscarriages“ so even though I don't test positive for any clotting disorders they had me start fragmin injections at 10dpo when I had a blood pregnancy test (we were doing fertility treatments). I have not actually met anyone before who continued them after the pregnancy so I have no experience with that, my dr had me stop at 26 weeks and most people I know stay on them and have a scheduled induction so they can stop them at the right time so I would think if you have to stay on them that a homebirth isn't likely b/c the risk of hemorrhage would be quite high if you stay on them for the delivery.

Apparently most ppl would have stopped the fragmin in my situation around the same time as the progesterone, 10 weeks or the end of the first trimester but with my m/c's, DD being growth restricted, my placenta failing, etc, they had me continue until 26 weeks and DS weighed 9lbs, 4oz compared to DD's 5lbs, 13oz so it seems I really do have a clotting disorder of some sort.

Thank you for sharing your experience. It has made me think that I should ask Dr. Blood if I could taper the heparin closer to delivery and then return to the normal dose after delivery. I know that with DD I didn't clot right away and they had to inject me with all sorts of things to stop the bleeding after she was delivered (via c-section). I did not have the clotting problem in my blood with DD. Apparently it can develop at any time.

Did you have any problems with your injection sites bruising or other side effects? Were the injections quick and easy to give yourself or did they require any special consideration?

Thanks Alicia for letting me know that it is not a treatment out of left field.

I have factor 5 leiden, I got a blood clot while pregnant with DS. I was on Fragmin from week 30 until 8 weeks postpartum.
When I got pregnant for my second I was told to go see my blood specialist ASAP and get on a preventative dosage of Fragmin. I did daily injections in my belly from week 5, I gave birth 3 weeks ago, and I will continue with my fragmin for another 3 weeks.
As for bruising, at first I wasn't very good at the injections, but after a month or so, I became a pro. It takes some getting used to, slow injections bruise less.

I had a midwife, no home birth as for you are considered HIGH RISK. I am not sure if they still take patients with Factor 5 Leiden anymore.
I also had to be induced because you have to go off your blood thinners to give birth and then back on them once your little one arrives.

You're welcome! Most of the women I know who stayed on it throughout stopped a day or two before a scheduled induction so maybe that is what he is thinking?

The injections were quick and easy but I did bruise A LOT at first and they'd last a month! At one point I nearly ran out of injection sites on my belly. LOL. I found they stung a little, compared to the ovidrel injections which were the only others I'd given myself. Here's a pic of sometime very early on, I think it was within the first week or so of injections? (I was pretty bloated already with the progesterone though, man I miss my belly looking more like that! After such a big baby it's more wrinkley now with stretchmarks LOL).
