Default Caster Semenya - this breaks my heart.

Sprinter Caster Semenya a hermaphrodite: reports

Reading the comments after was as painful as the story itself. That poor, poor person.

    to save the click:

Caster Semenya, the South African sprinter who won the women's 800-metre event at last month's track and field world championships in Berlin, is a hermaphrodite, according to several published reports.
According to the reports, the International Association of Athletics Federations was preparing to disqualify Semenya, 18, from future events after gender tests uncovered evidence that she has no womb or ovaries, and carries both male and female sexual organs. They will not, however, strip Semenya of the gold medal from Berlin.
Sources involved in the IAAF testing, which involved various scans, said Semenya was found to have internal testes and three times the amount of testosterone that a “normal“ female would have.
The sport's governing body, which has not decided whether or not it will strip Semenya of her 800m world championships gold medal, will also advise the runner to seek immediate surgery, believing her condition poses significant health risks.

I could punch them for using the term hermaphrodite, frankly, but gah.

Aww and to have that broadcasted to the world is probably seriously hard

    That's seriously personal.

It raises this whole huge complicated issue for me though, that I think about quite often. What is gender, and why do we get so hung up on it. And yet this is an example of where it WOULD matter, when it comes to fairness in sport.

Just a tough situation because to not compete with such talent would be a shame too, but in her case it would be an advantage one I would think would be unfair, especially if I was one of the ppl competing against her.

I hope with all this publicity she is fareing okay.

My heart goes out to her, too. I'm not sure what the right thing is in this case. I just don't know.

So sad. Why not just let her be the gender she's identified with and be done with it? Like that tennis player in the 70's/80's..? Some things are just not the worlds' business.

Im glad there is an answer to her obvious wins ... but to broadcast in this manner... sigh.

It is so complicated. I HATE gender roles/gender stereotyping but just like you said there are some circumstances where it does matter.

Mini-hack then right back to the main post. Who was it? You don't mean Martina?

No, I think I meant her: Renée Richards - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Unless there was another? I just remember learning about it, but I don't follow tennis!

Too bad they felt the need to broadcast this far and wide.

I feel bad for Caster, and I'm not sure what the correct course of action is. She would definitely have an advantage over other females, but not intentionally, kwim? That's a tough one.
