Default Long overdue and long winded birth story...

I woke up Sunday morning feeling a small gush of fluid, I wasn’t able to reproduce the sensation with bearing down so I concluded that I might have peed myself, perhaps with a shift in the baby’s position. I was feeling hand movements where the baby’s back had been positioned.

I felt some mild sporadic contractions during the morning. I called our doula Pam to get her help to determine if I was in fact in labour. We decided that with my GBS positive status that it would be best to have my midwife Binh come and see if my water had broken. She arrive around noon. She examined me and found no evidence that my water had broken. She left again, and I felt embarrassed to have had a false alarm, not to mention the fact that I thought I had completely lost bladder control!

Pam and I went for a walk to see if we could get my contractions stronger and more regular. Things didn’t change much so we decided she should leave but stay in town in case things changed. Ray and I timed contractions from 2-3pm. They came anywhere from 3 to 12 minutes apart and were lasting 45 seconds. I tried lying down to see if I could rest and they got so strong I had to get up again. I called my best friend who was at our DD’s birth and we chatted over the webcam. I started using Contraction Master when the contractions seemed closer together – they were about 3 minutes apart, but only ~35 seconds long. I was still getting gushes of fluid, when one soaked my mama cloth, my underpants and my shorts (at about 5:15) we decided it was best to hang up and call back my doula and midwife.

Binh checked me and I was 4cm so I was now in “active labour” and got my first dose of antibiotics at 7pm. I continued to labour trying various positions. My contractions were still sporadic so we decided to keep me walking as much as possible. I hated going through the actual contraction standing so I started pacing the family room and kitchen between contractions and sitting on the exercise ball during. Ray rubbed my back as a distraction and gently laid his hand on my shoulder to remind me to keep them as relaxed as possible.

After 2 hours (at 9pm) Binh wanted to check my progress. I told her that even if I was still at 4cm she had to lie to me and tell me at least 4.5! I was delighted when she declared me 6cm.

At about 9:30 pm I moved into the bathtub. I was able to relax and vocalize through some stronger contractions. When Binh checked again (10:15 ish?) I was 8-9cm and she called the backup midwife.

It was time to move out of the tub and on to the bed. I waited out the next contraction, started to get out of the tub and another hit. I stepped out of the tub and another came. When I got to the bed one push and the baby went from 0 to crowning! Binh coached me through small pushes but only a couple of minutes later I tore and the baby’s head was born. Ray caught the baby on the next push and announced that we had a baby boy!

The second midwife arrived about 10 minutes later.
