You're eastern european, yes, I think you've mentioned before? It's interesting, I just had a conversation with my friend from CR about this, and she was outraged when a neighbour reported them for some kind of thing they were doing with water on their land, and she feels like this is some kind of distinctively Canadian whistleblowing mentality that she finds offensive to her very core. Fascinating.

I am eastern european as well, and I find that this issue has nothing to do with where I was brought up.
Honestly my reaction was out of rage and common sense...eastern euro thing...funny, I have never heard that generalization.

It wasn't a generalization, really, just curious. My friend thought that perhaps it was because they had rebelled against communism and had rejected the 'brother's keeper' mentality, sort of 'citizen banding with citizen' AGAINST the govt, whereas she feels that here we rat each other out at the drop of a hat so to speak.
Honestly not trying to say “All eastern europeans feel X“ branka, I didn't mean to offend you.

haha, zoo no worries, I am not offended. It's just that I have never heard of that. Yes, we did have both socialism AND communism, but that comradery is long gone.

Yeah, I'm not seeing a problem with it? I'm not familiar with your condo rules but we've had tv's picked up on the side of the road. Also have lived in apts in the past and people would put mattresses, couches, tvs etc by the bin to go. Not seeing a problem with the smashing inside the container either - it's a garbage bin? Who cares what the inside looks like - The bin is just being dumped in a truck anyways.

We have a clear tennant code of conduct that forbids throwing of furniture, including electronics into the garbage.
We are also NOT allowed to dump things on the sidewalk.
It is plain and simple. We had to arrange for our mattress, washing machine, dryer and other big items to be taken to the city dump (some were taking for recycling).
And if you cannot see what is wrong with dumping a TV and letting it smash into a million pieces then there is really no point in me even attempting to explain it.

Guess I just dont see the difference between the tv being smashed in the dumpster and it being placed nicely on a mound in the dump then being rolled over?

Plus, it wouldn't even make it to the dump in 1 piece... the truck compacts it all anyways.

Well yes, I'm from Europe, it's in the heart of Europe actually where I came from. Yes I found it weird and really don't like it here, but I decided to live here and I have to deal with it, right, when it's something the others find normal and perfectly fine, I have to accept it.. But I tell you, I'll never do it myself, as it drove me nuts back in London when people reported our “messy“ backyard at the time we were moving and packing stuff out of our basement. Somebody just told to the city guys, they came when we weren't at home and took all the things from our backyard without us knowing about it (lots of there wasn't garbage...we were planning to do something with it) and they even charged us for “garbage removal. And it wasn't condo we lived in, it was our house, our backyard....I would kill somebody being so “helpful“. Back in Europe my neighbor would ask if I needed a hand with it, what was going on so there was such a load back there, if he could help me somehow. But here are people obviously helpful some other way? Sorry, still upset about that experience here!

Nope actually there is a much bigger issue here and I thought that was what the OP was talking about. Old TV are full of hazardous waste. They are full of toxins like lead, pounds of lead. When smashed they release the lead into the enviroment or leach out of landfills. Not good for any of us. They are banned from landfill and must be paid to be recycled....but it depends on where you live.

ETA- Cross post with Lucka (sorry about your bad neighbour), the 'nope' portion of my post was refering to the posts before...no offence was intended.

I got the impression though that she was upset that it was being disposed of through the condo. She would have rathered the neighbour drove it to the dump like she did because that would have been somehow better than it being smashed in the dumpster. THAT is what I didn't get - how is it better to be driven to the dump than either placed nicely beside the dumpster or thrown in the dumpster?
Obviously best case is that it never goes to the dump. BUT best case neither does the couch or the mattress or the table and chairs or the mirror etc etc. There are tones of things that go into the trash that could be partly reused/recycled. Not that that is an exucse to not do it but if we are going to get picky about TV's there are many other products that we need to look at too.

I get this but if they take them to the landfill instead of recycling and the garbage trucks take them from the curb I was confused about how it's different to just leave it in the garbage dumpster or how it matters if it smashes in the garbage. I would have understood better if this was a vent about improperly disposing of garbage that should be recycled which is what I expected and why I was confused I think. Thanks for the links though!
