Default Need a support worker for 3 hours a day for a week in July - where to start?

Title sums it up. I wanna send the boy to a camp that can only accommodate if he has his own worker. It's out of pocket, on top of camp expenses, but it's worth it for this particular thing, as he's been begging for it for 3 years and is finally old enough.

Where do I start though? Oi vey, I've never hired anyone!

Do they need qualifications or can it be anyone?

Well. Honestly, I'm going to be like 5 minutes away while he's at camp, so I can come and deal with any crazy shit, I'd really just need someone to be making sure he takes his turn, understands instructions, etc.

Of course, ideally it would be someone with loads of experience with autistic kids but I'm not sure how I could get that for $150ish for the week ya know?

Honestly, it's more important that they connect with him than have years of schooling too. I've known some highly educated and experienced folks to totally not 'get' him.

How much would someone make working for a week at a Tim Horton's part time? I have a couple of neighbour girls who both do that in the summer. I wonder if they could work around M-F 9-12 for $150? Would that be insulting?

Call VON as they hire out support workers who have experience with autistic children.

Thanks, I should probably know that. Sigh. We've seriously never gone outside the family for babysitting or anything.

I don't think 150 is insulting - it's 10 an hour. Likely exactly what they would get at Tim's. Presumably without having to pay EI though. And they would still have the rest of the day to work at Tims if they wanted to.

I know Fanshawe has introduced a new Autism and Behavioural Sciences post-graduate program. Perhaps there will be a new graduate from the program that is looking for summer employment?

I thought about that, but I figure that if they were offered a full time placement somewhere it would be a no-brainer to bail on my piddly gig.

aw..your right Zoo, that would not be good for him.

Hmm....could you post at UWO, perhaps a grad student that is looking for extra income during the summer? Even a student/graduate of Althouse since many of them may be looking for summer employment and will not likely be employed full-time until September.
