    Default Photography?

Well my new Nikon D60 just came today and I am currently charging it all up! I am so excited but now I have no idea where to start. I searched thru some old threads and wondered if that LM photography group ever was started up?

I am interested in something like a meeting or a group online or something.

Where do I start with this thing?

What else should I get? It came with a 12-55mm lens.

Photoshop software? Are some places cheaper than others? What is manual mode?

    THANKS

    Just get out & shoot!!!

I'm still learning my Canon Rebel (and it's been a yr)

Amazing shots are with an external flash. lens, well, a great portrait lens is the 50mm lens (mine was $129)

A telephoto lens, well, I've done well without but it might be of interest to you.

Are you on FB? There are some amazing photoshop & photography groups there...

Manual mode, I don't use right now, I'm still in auto but shoot in AV mode (it provides good depth of field).
There is a photography group in St Thomas. Their fee is $25 a yr, which is amazing considering the quality of photos the group produces.

ohh, and if you can get people to sit for free for you while you're learning, all the better.
My SIL offered to let me do belly photos for free, I'm so excited.

The photo group was started, but I think alot of people joined & didn't participate so when it came up for renewal, Tracy let it expire. The ones of us that did contribute enjoyed it immensely though and were challenged.
If you're looking for a wish list, I'd get:
    -an external flash
    -a 300mm zoom lense
-tripod and remote so you can do your own family photos
    -comfy camera bag

Manual mode is where you can adjust your settings/focus, etc. to manipulate the picture. I tend to use the aperture setting alot, as it blurrs the background and focuses directly on the subject.
I found that Mostly Digital had the best prices for alot of things.
Hope this helps! Have fun with the camera, it's addicting.

Yes, the photo group was set up and a few of us were posting quite a bit. However, the site went wonky on us and Tracy has been trying to deal with it as far as I know. She has been paying I believe, but they weren't providing the sevice. I just messaged her on FB to see what was up.

My advice to you would be read the manual! Front to back... over and over again. It helped me so much in the beginning! Then I found some mommy boards that had photo groups on them and posted my pictures and asked for feedback! You need to post all of them though... ESPECIALLY the ones that don't work out.

Also, I did lots of reading online. There are some really helpful sites out there.

Lastly... GET SHOOTING! Try different settings to see what they do. Don't be afraid of the camera... SNAP AWAY!

    Good luck and have fun!

I recommend reading Understanding Exposure to learn how to shoot in manual. It's available at Chapters.

ilovephotography.com is a good, free forum to check out. You'll see in the JSO (just starting out) area, there are places to post your pics for commentary as you work through Understanding Exposure (and some other books too).

I'd upgrade your lens too. If you want to do mainly portraiture, I'd get whatever the Nikon equivalent is to the Canon 50 mm 1.8 (or 1.4).

If your lucky, Costco might still have Understanding Exposure. I picked it up there for $13

With the D60 there are certain lenses you have to buy. The reason for this is that the body does not have a motor in it to run auto focus with these lenses. If you call Henry's they will tell you about it. There are lenses you can buy obviously but they are more expensive. You can choose to manually focus everything but with running kids and candids its a lot more work than you need to do. Read your manual front to back and just practice on different settings, learn to use the light meter too, and mostly just enjoy yourself, it will come to you ! Have fun!!!
