    Default Body odour

My 8 year old has just started to smell of body odour. I started to let her use an aluminium free deodrant, which is not anti-presperant. But it isnt working. Do u think its safe to use an anti-prespant deodrant on her and if so, which brand do u reccomend?

    Thanks in advance!

Have you tried the crystal kind? I know there are fancier probably more natural ones, but Shoppers sells one in a pinkish holder, which is nice cos it's convenient like a normal stick deodorant....it worked when I was in uni.

I don't think it is safe to use an anti perspirant at all. I think that we sweat for a reason and it is to release toxins from our body.

I know someone who needed a good deodorant and the crystal kind worked for her.

I would make sure she is washing her arm pits good too with a soapy washcloth in the bath.

Other then that I don't have a whole lot, I see your concern though, I woulnd't want my kid to have issues where possible other kids could comment, I don't think using anti persiprants is the worst thing, but just at such a young age, I would really hesitate personally.

I don't use anything if your wondering, I do on occasion use anti perspirant, but I have been meaning to replace it with toms of main in the orange package, I hear it works pretty good.

Have you talked with your doctor. I'd want to make sure there were no underlying health issues. Just a thought. He may also have some recommendations for you.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I must try the crystal deodorant.

Yes I spoke to my Dr. who just said to make sure she is washing under her arms with soap every day.

Just a note: With the crystal, I find I personally have to use it a few times a day for it to be really effective. I find if I apply it a few times it's just as good as antiperspirant.

Some of the kids I work with have this issue...we encourage them to have a shower in the morning and again after supper, and change clothes each time. Also, perhaps washing her clothing with an antibacterial wash? We use Dettol along with laundry soap, and make sure the extra rinse option is on.

I have also heard that mouthwash with alcohol is an effective alternate to deoderants/antipersperants. Just a thought...

My 10 year old uses antiperspirant - has been for over a year.
Although I originally bought it because of the "hockey smell" he gets, I find he actually needs it now for BO. The pamphlet that came home from the school "sex ed." class talks about needing to start using deodorant / antiperspirant on a daily basis around age 9.
