Disability Tax Credit/Certificate
I think this was posted previously but I havent had the brain power to search for it.
I just got a letter after FINALLY sending in my application saying that the girls were approved for this and thought I would pass this onto other parents with special needs children. I think you have to do 14 hours A WEEK of life sustaining therapy per child to qualify but hey - you never know, right?
T2201 - Disability Tax Credit Certificate
You need a letter from your doctor (who also has to fill out a section of the application) outlining the care you provide for your child and then you will get a letter saying if you qualify or not. They are qualifying us for A since her birth year (2005) and for K since hers (2007) so all I had to do was fill out a T1 income Request form (available online, the letter outlines where to get it from) for each year from 2005-2007 (really easy just your name, sin, and what you got approved for) and now we just wait to see what our amount is. I am guessing it goes on your income but hey....
Just thought i would share It's worth a shot ladies.

And don't forget, if you are eligible for this, you are eligible for the Child Disability Benefit where you get a monthly cheque:
If a child under 18 years of age is eligible for the disability
amount, that child is also eligible for the Child Disability
Benefit, an amount available under the Canada Child
Tax Benefit. For more information, visit our Web site at
or see Pamphlet T4114,
Canada Child Benefits.

I think we have the girls on that already I hate the fact that my girls are considered "special needs" but at leat the government has programs available to help parents live with the extra stuff.

I was just told I need to fill out a special form for 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 and they will readjust everything accordingly.

Do you need to complete anything else for the CDB? I was under the impression that once CRA approves the T2201 that you automatically get the CDB completed for you. I'm going to try to complete the disability portion of our taxes tonight to see if it helps our taxes better for last year as per suggestions from Happymommy in Ask the Experts - Accountant.

That's correct about the CDB - as long as you receive the Child Tax Credit (or whatever it's called). If you don't receive it, you don't receive the CDB.
Definitely do readjustments for previous years or claim the Disability Tax Credit if you can! No word of a lie, our refunds are anywhere from $3000 to $5000 MORE (we used to owe every year) than previously because of the Disability Tax Credit! It makes a HUGE difference!

Wow Tansie, that is impressive! I'll really have to plug in those numbers tonight. I hope it changes our situation to not owe....or if we do to lower it a bunch too. Good to hear it can really make a difference.

They will actually give this for a variety of different reasons. Ds is deaf and has cochlear implants and we qualify. For the last 2 years we got back around $5000 total, whereas before we used to pretty much break even. This is the first year that I have been working all tax-year, so no clue if that will make it go up or down.

Does anyone know, after you get the letter from the dr, get the whole thing approved, blah blah, do you ever have to re-apply? Or is it just a given now when I do my taxes?

It depends on what the approval says from CRA. Most are approved for 3 yrs (I think) and then you have to reapply. But, in cases like my son's - Down syndrome and Autism - he was approved indefinitely which means we never have to reapply. Those things are just NEVER going to go away and therefore he will always have a disability.

D was approved for 6 years, in my case I applied with the forms and I included the reports from the doctor.
It takes a long time though I know I waited close to a year for mine to go through from the the time I mailed it off to when I got the CDB back dated in my account

Yah, we made the mistake of applying WITH our return and it took over 7 months to be approved. I called and asked WTH was taking so long... Down syndrome is a no-brainer, not like we were applying because we had a bad back! Needless to say, it was done within the week.
Needless to say, I always recommend to people to do it as soon as you can. Do not wait for tax season!
