Does the phrase "God keep our land" belong in "Oh Canada"?

An offhand comment in another thread reminded me that this irks me.

Not enough to try to ban it or anything, simmer down folks, I come bearing no flaming pitchfork.

Seriously, though, if we have separation of church & state, why are we asking god to keep our land? And why are we expecting non-christians to sing it?

And I think my mom might be older than the anthem, so it's not like it's ALWAYS BEEN THAT WAY, it's not that old a song.

And isn't it just that? A song? What does it really mean to you?

Yeah, annoys me too. If I remember correctly, it's only in the English version too.

No it doesn't. We say church and state are separate but they're not really. There is some reference to God in the American constitution as well, no? I'm quite sure there is but I don't recall what it is exactly. And everything shuts down for Christmas.

There's no recognized separation of church and state in the US though is there? I was agape watching the inauguration, but apparently that's all normal.

Did you all hear on the CBC about the guy who is freaking out on Canada Post coz they got him to stop doing this recall ritual they had about 'Merci Dieu pour la bonne journee' (thank you God for the beautiful day). Someone grieved it with the union I believe? Or directly to CP, they told him to stop under threat of suspension, and he is trolling around the media crying for sympathy. Dude just stop using religious references in the workplace, it's not rocket science.
