Default Any quilt makers out there??

    Hi ladies!

I am in the process of decorating my DDs "toddler" bedroom. With a new baby on the way, due in July, we need a new bedroom, so the office is getting booted to the basement.

Anyway, I am doing a ladybug theme in her new room and can't find any bedding I like . . . so, I am going to attempt to make a quilt for her. I am a half decent seamstress, but have never done a full-size quilt. Any tips?

    TIA!

My Mom is a BIGTIME quilter... and here's the tips that I've gathered from her over the years:

    Get thicker cotton to use.
Buy 20% extra fabric just in case of a mess-up.
Wash it first, twice, before you cut anything.
    Iron well before you cut.
For great Fabric - go to Joanne's in the states. It's so worth the trip - their fabric is gorgeous!

Oh - Fabric land has a member's card that can save a bunch on the cost of fabric, backing and threads. They have members only sales (once a few months) where you can get 50% off anything in the store.

I'm a quilter. Are you piecing it or doing aplique?

also make sure you match the thread with the fabric - in that you use cotton thread with cotton fabrics etc.... I had issues with the crib quilt I made, after washing it, it bunched up all funny because the thread shrunk more than the cotton blend fabric I was used...

I would say buy good quality fabric and thread. It is not worth cheaping out when you are spending that much time making something special.

I love to quilt, but don't have enough time. The best tips my MIL taught me were to: wash fabric first, buy good quality fabric, draw your quilt out first, and obviously buy a little extra fabric for mistakes, Be Creative!!
