Default How do you celebrate kids birthdays?

Ds birthday is today, but we had a little party for him Sunday with relatives. Dh and I gave him a present this morning, and although he knows it is his birthday today (Sunday he would tell you it isn't his birthday, just his party!) he doesn't actually know what it means.
I have 4 pieces of left over cake that we'll eat tonight and stick a candle in for him to blow out again, but that is all we are doing.

Is his birthday being overlooked? Is this suffient for a 3 year old?

For our kids birthdays if they fall on a weeknight we will just do a family thing. Go for supper, make something at home. Get a cake and sing with some presents and then we will do a family/friend party on the weekend.

As far as telling your son about his birthday I think that is hard as this age because they are a bit young to go into the 'where babies come from speech' lucky for us our DD never asked. She just knows that on that day she came into the world and out of mommy's tummy didnt get into the details of how she got there or how she got out and that was enough for her plus the presents sort of distracted her.

That seems fine to me. My dd will be 3 in a few weeks and we don't go overboard. We do try to keep it separate from Christmas though. So we don't decorate for Christmas until after her birthday.

We had something similar, we had a party on the weekend, and her birthday was in the week (she was 3 as well). We did something like you, except I think I made some cupcakes because we didn't have leftovers and made her favourite dinner (she's very picky!) and gave her a present to open (I think something smaller as I think we gave her 'big' one at the party).

Happy birthday to your little guy!!

I think doing this this way is fine. We do something similar in all honesty. Happy Birthday to your little guy btw!

We always give our kids a present on their actual day, but their parties are on COMPLETELY different days (sometimes weeks). I don't think they grasp the concept of it at three years old.

Our kids b-days are so close together

We do a small celebration on the actual day. Either a cake or cupcakes (their choice). Their dinner choice (can be unusual). That is also the day we give their gift. As for a party we usually combine it as it is so close to Christmas and each others B-days. They so far like this idea so we will go with it!

We recently celebrated our 6 yr olds b-day at Kidscape. If you haven't heard of it you must take your kids, it's very clean and safe with tonnes to do for you and the kids! Lots of equipment to play on, plasma cars, reading area, a play area (very padded) for 36 months and under and much more. We go almost once a week, and we love it. Usually we do the go out to dinner with family and a present (low key affair). But we felt our daughter deserved a special day since our younger son Brody was diagnosed with Autism in March. She's been a real inspiratio through this whole journey.
