I got a great fabric wrap for 40 bucks new when my son was about 4 months and I wish I'd had it sooner because I didn't get much use out of it. although the use I did get was great. now he doesn't want to be carried like that now since he's a year old and walking... well running now. I'd wanted one before he was born but I didn't know abou the 40$ ones and I didn't want to spend a fortune online for the moby style. best baby buy ever, next baby gift I buy anyone will be a baby sling!

Newborn wrap/sling
I've been scanning through these posts and so much info!! Kind of overwhelming for a newbie to this stuff
I'm not due til July, but am already really thinking about what to use for my baby as I'll be busy with a toddler and think I'll be in need of something really great. Any suggestions please? And also, suggestions on forums, sites etc for purchasing new or used? I tend to have larger babies... so something that would work for the first couple months, then something after that... What were your absolute favs if you were to purchase a couple? I did have a blue celery wrap for my first, and kind of liked it...but didn't love it. Found it did cause pressure in my back and didn't hold the baby as comfortably as I would have liked. That's about all my experience. I like the idea of a wrap or sling for a newborn then something more cloth carrier like? But really don't know. Any suggestions...please and thanks!

Congrats on your second little one coming!
Stretchy wraps are very popular for the newborn stage, the material is similar to the blue celery, if I understand the blue celery correctly, but because it is a wrap it gives you more flexibility and you can have the weight distributed differently. Stretchy wraps tend to work till between 15 and 20 lbs, depending on who you talk to, so that should get you through the newborn phase.
I personally liked having a ring sling for quick in and out situations, errands, and then later when they want up-down-up-down They're not great for longer periods of time, in my opinions, because of the one shoulder setup, but so fast to get them in and out!!
For another carrier, I'd say a wrap, a Mei Tai or a soft structured carrier, depending on what you want to do. All have their merits and can do both front and back carries. Wraps tend to give you the most options but have the biggest learning curve. There are regular baby wearing meetings in town, you might like to go to one to see what others have

Stretchy wraps are quickly out grown. If you dont want something that will need to be replaced quickly get a woven wrap. Come to a baby wearing meeting and ask questioins/feel/try some out. We meet the second tuesday of the month at childrens library (wellington and some street I cant think of.... right near galleria mall). We meet near the train tables in the kids section.

I'm currently wearing my little one right now. I have a moby wrap and it is my life-saver. She only falls asleep nursing or in the wrap (while bouncing on my exercise ball). If I didn't have this wrap from day one, well I think poor ODD would be the one who suffers because I wouldn't be able to walk around, grab her a drink/snack, play with her, etc.
I'd love to go to a babywearing group because I'm interested in a soft structured carrier or a ring sling and would love to see some in action. So from what I gather there are the 2nd Tues of the month (I can't make Jan. 11 unfortunately, in-laws visiting then) at the Central library, children's section?
