Default Where to volunteer with children/as a family?

I think I have asked this before but lets see if there are any new ideas

This year DH's family is doing a donation instead of gift buying. We are to donate money to somewhere instead of buying gifts and then share how it helped. I know my children aren't all that little anymore (8, 7, 5, 4) and yes we will make a financial donation as well but I prefer to teach them through donating time, not just money. We can go buy a toy or whatever to donate to a child without but I don't think they truly understand that there are children who don't have many toys or proper footwear or winter coats. My older two do, but I think it is a hard concept for a four year old. To buy a child a pair of winter boots or giving a homeless person a nice pair of socks can't be fully grasped by a young child that has all their basic necessities met.

In the past our family has helped with a, for lack of a better term, soup kitchen and a few gifts like socks etc for some of the guests, volunteered at the food bank, salvation army kettles, and visited nursing homes.

I have only found one soup kitchen that will allow children, and find for insurance reasons or whatever that many organizations aren't able to allow kids/families. I'm looking for something new though if anyone has any ideas they could share.

You could make a meal for the families staying at Ronald McDonald house.

I like the idea of helping at the Ronald McDonald house! You could make cards, sing for them or buy presents for them. Maybe try calling someone who works there and get their opinion on how your family could volunteer. I am sure they have restrictions because of germs but maybe there is something you could do. Kids relate to kids.
