    Default Child support question.

Ex asked me tonight for my sin number so he can claim the child support he pays me, this is the first year we've had to deal with this issue and I've never even heard of them being able to claim it in anyway. I guess my question is, is he being legit ? Should I give him my sin? I don't trust who he has doing his taxes so don't want to unless its absolutely necessary.
    Thanks

I am pretty sure that he cant claim child support. I would definitely not be giving him your SIN.

Do not give it to him, you cannot claim what you pay in child support on taxes

Don't give him your SIN. Read this Federal Child Support Guidelines: What Ontario Families Need to Know - Ministry of the Attorney General

Q14 - How do the tax changes for child support work?
A - The federal government changed the income tax rules which apply to child support orders or agreements made on or after May 1, 1997. As a result of these changes, the parent who receives child support will not pay income tax on the child support payments. The parent who pays child support will not be able to deduct those payments for income tax purposes.

If your child support arrangements were made prior to May 1, the income tax changes do not automatically apply to you. You will have to ask for the changes to apply. For information, contact the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency at 1-800-959-8281 for service in English, and 1-800-959-7383 for service in French.

Looks like you don't need me to confirm

Given that this is the first year you are dealing with it, I'd also answer that child support is not deductible to the payer on an agreement recently signed. And as an aside, CRA almost always questions deductions related to spousal/child support in the first few years after they apply. They wouldn't assess a deduction with child support post 1987 for him.

Spousal support is deductible but unless it's clearly laid out as such in your agreement it sounds like it's not applicable.

Hope it all goes as smoothly as possible.

This is true but I think he can claim spousal support if you get that....

Thanks ladies! I didn't think I did either, seemed off when he was asking me. I'm very guarded with where my sin gets signed and I didn't feel comfy at all givin it to him.
