Default Car seat question...What is the law?

DS will be turning 8 in a few weeks.
Dh mentioned that when you are 8 or 80lbs you no longer need the booster seat. DS got really excited. Me not so much. He only weighs 50lbs.

What is your thoughts and expirences with this?
I am wondering what is the law for Ontario on this and can you please provide links. TIA

Here is the link from the MTO. Scroll down to see the section on boosters.

Safe & Secure: Choosing the right car seat for your child

Please keep in mind that 8yrs/80lbs/145cm is the MINIMUM LEGAL STANDARD. If you don't feel that your child is ready to be on the seat without a booster, listen to your instinct.

Here's a handy way to tell if your child can sit safely on the seat without a booster:

Mine is now 9, and at age 8 he wanted to be rid of his. He was also 50lbs at the time. He finds if he is in a car that the seatbelt is OK, but in my van it goes on his neck, so he needs the couple added inches from the booster seat.

I don't really think the seat helps based on weight at all, but it makes him tall enough for the seatbelt to fit properly/comfortably. So my son chose for himself that he wants the booster seat in the van.

Legally, yes at 8, or 80lbs, or 4'9“ no booster is required.

This is my favorite link for those thinking of going without a booster. It illustrates what good belt fit is, and what is not.

My dd was out of a booster at age 8, but was almost 100 lbs and tall enough for the seatbelt to fit properly. My DS will be 12 in March, is about 70 lbs and is still in a booster.

My DD is 8 but not near the height requirements so we keep her in a booster for the height in our Honda because the seatbelt comes down from the ceiling and crosses her neck. She is ok in our truck as the seat belt comes from the back of the bench seat so it comes across her shoulder perfectly. She will be in a booster until she is at least the minimum height but will gauge it based on the positioning of the belt.
