    Default Fondant

I'm getting pretty crafty with this stuff. I love it, and the cakes look so clean and cool. However, it has come to my attention that the fondant isn't very tasty. I currently use wilton, plain white (I colour it) and I guess its just not flavorful.

What do you use? Or am I better to make my own?

I buy pre-made fondant from Scoops in St. Thomas. It is really really inexpensive and tastes much better than the Wilton stuff (and its cheaper). I know they sell it in white and black (its so hard to colour black I guess).

Marshmallow fondant is so easy to make and tastes good too.

It's impossible almost to colour black! I buy the wiltons gel as well ans it makes the fondant wet and grainy and sticky by the time you get it a decent black shade.

Thanks ladies! My mom wants me to make a cake for my step dad and she didn't want the regular fondant I use haha.

For black you have to start out with chocolate

I second Scoops in St Thomas. Best fondant I've ever used. White and Chocolate, the chocolate truly tastes like fudge, my kids will eat it right out of the package. The white is pretty good too, I've noticed my kids stealing it when I'm not looking. They sell it by the pound or by the 11lb (I think, it could be larger) pail.

As a side note, their cake release is much better and cheaper than wilton's too.

I just think Scoops has wonderful cake making supplies. Much better than Bulk Barn or Michael's

My sister makes marshmallow fondant. It tastes like marshmallows.... I love the look, not the taste.

I make my own with just marshmallows, icing sugar, and water.

Ungers sells a fondant in a big pail and its really good! It's been a while since I bought it but I think they refer to it as a sugar paste (sugar something, I can't exactly remember). Just ask they will know what your talking about! It's sweet not like the Wilton fondant

I use marshmallow fondant too. I make my own and did a cars cake for DS (first time I had ever used fondant) and got an awesome black out of it. I started with white MMF, added red and brown and got it nice and chocolatey looking, then added some red and then black. It looked like tires.

Wilton fondant is terrible! In my opinion the most awful thing you will ever tastes. I do cakes as a side job, I often tell people that a regular butter cream icing is the best you will taste. It may not look perfect but if people are going to eat it, that's what you want. If people still want fondant I go do Ungers, best fondant I've ever had! I have yet to try to make my own though, but until I do I will stick with Ungers.

When I took cake classes I even had my teacher (who worked for Wilton) to not use Wilton fondant because it was so awful!

Scoops in St Thomas will also sell coloured fondant, I think the last time I bought it it was $6.99 per pound

IMO fondant may look nice but it tastes disgusting. Ladies, when you make your cakes think about the people eating them. Ask yourself- are you making this cake for the look, or for the taste? Taste should trump appearance, as this is food, not just a craft.
