    Default Claiming tuition amounts

I took 2 courses in 2008 that issued T2202A receipts. I just realized that I never claimed them on my income tax that year. Can I claim them on my 2011 income tax or do I need to do an adjustment for my 2008 return? I usually do my own taxes.

    Hi there,

You need to file an adjustment for 2008. Just down load one of the “t1 adjustment request“ forms from CRA's website, fill in (it's one page), include the T2202 forms (make copies ) and you're done.

I don't think you'd need to file for 2008 again. When I was in university and didn't need it since I didn't make enough, it would get moved forward to the next year

I'm with H&R block so they just use as much as I need and with 1 kid I could earn about $20,000 before paying taxes, so a lot of credits get moved to the next year. I would think it would be the same if you decided not to use it one year or if you no longer needed it that year so you moved the credits forward to the next year.

I would call the person or company who does your taxes and ask them about it

Just popping back in to say you're right melissawiliam that if you don't need the tuition credit to eliminate tax in the year it's issued you can carry it forward until it's all used up.

You still need to record / claim it in the 2008 tax year so ANON you'll still need to file the T1 adjustment for 2008. You can't just add it in in 2011. It's a paper exercise but one that's required to be done in this order. If you don't need it for 2008 it will carry forward until you do need it.

    Hope it all works out.
