they usually insist up on a huge chunk upfront.

it depends, some are. the lawyer I used to work for was more than willing to accept payments - he generally asked for a 2000 retainer, but was content to accept monthly cheques towards it. call around and talk to some and see what their policy is. despite what most people think, not all lawyers are bad! lol

I had to pay $3000 upfront for the retainer for our lawyer but she has let us pay monthly on the rest that is owing. Right now I pay $200 per month but plan to do more once I am back at work....if I stay at this rate though, I will be paying her for another couple of years.

    ouch!! laywers are expensive eh!
Thankfully, i got a loan from legal aid.. they wouldn`t let me off with the lower fee, but they loaned me the 5000 they estimated i`d need, paid the laywer directly, now i pay them (legal aid) monthly. the tough part is finding one that will let you work on the retainer in installments. MOST of them do inisist on a chunk upfront, which, for MOST of us, is the problem right?!
There are good ones out there.... it just takes some time to find them.

I paid bills that were sent intermittantly and I believe mine does accept payment plan, no retainer was requested.

With our lawyer, once the $3000 retainer was gone, she just billed us for the rest of her services. In total, once the retainer was used up, we accrued approx. another $5500 in charges and that's what we are paying on monthly right now. She had stated that if we were going to pay monthly that we had to do $500 payments but I am on mat leave right now, so I have been sending $200 payments for the past 10mths and she hasn't had an issue. Hopefully you can work something out similar with your lawyer.

My lawyer asked 3500$ as a retainer to be used at the last bill (which is far in the future) now I have a bill of 22,000.00$ to my marge of credit with the bank so I could pay my lawyer....when I receive the next bill that will be around 5ooo$... was told that I could do monthly payments to them or I will have to add it to the 22K in my marge of credit....My marge of credit is charging me less interest than the lawyer....so it is better off this way....just managing interests rates at this point....
